Country music will continue to take center stage on American Idol as two of the genre’s biggest stars, Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood, are confirmed to return as judges for the show’s 2026 season. They’ll once again be joined by music icon Lionel Richie, making it a full return of the Season 23 judging panel.
The announcement was made this week with a playful, back-to-school-themed video shared across the show’s social media platforms. In the clip, the three judges take on the roles of quirky professors gearing up for a new year complete with coffee mugs and lunchboxes in hand. “Class is back in session,” says Bryan, while Underwood adds, “This year we’re majoring in music as we help launch your dreams.” Richie, always the optimist, is dubbed the “Professor of Positivity,” while Bryan embraces his fun-loving persona as the “Professor of Fun.” Carrie, ever the powerhouse vocalist, invites fans to join her class with a nod to her hit single "Blown Away."
The promo sets the stage for what promises to be another exciting season of talent discovery and the judges are already encouraging aspiring artists across the country to sign up for auditions. Virtual auditions begin Tuesday, August 26, and are open to hopefuls from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The show’s popular “Idol Across America” virtual audition tour kicks off on September 3, followed by another nationwide open call on September 24. As always, these auditions offer country singers a real shot at the national spotlight.
While the judges are locked in, one familiar face is still unconfirmed: longtime host Ryan Seacrest has yet to announce whether he’ll be returning for the upcoming season.
ABC hasn’t released an official premiere date for Season 24, but if the show follows its usual schedule, fans can expect the new season to kick off in spring 2026. Last season launched on March 9, so a similar timeline is likely.
