RIVER TREE/BRANCH is a Bronze | 6.2m long x 1.98m wide x .85m high

This sculpture consists of a 24' bronze Ironwood tree lying on its side, its position due, perhaps to high winds, or the ravage of time. River Tree/Bench’s ‘curved “spine” — the juncture from the roots has protrusions reminiscent of a backbone — and delicate root system, speaks to a sublime beauty in nature that can only be truly appreciated through a sympathetic understanding of what has been lost. River Tree/Bench was selected by the Jury Committee of the RMG

Sunday, June 22nd, Faith United is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada and everyone is invited to join us! At noon, we open with a potluck lunch or hot dogs on the barbecue – your choice. Then, it’s on to the games! We have lots of stuff for the whole family: bubbles, plant a seed, face painting, hopscotch, decorate a cookie, chalk pictures, and soccer. There will be cotton candy and freezies as well as lots of prizes.

We have a large property with lots of natural features to share. Our gardens are well-kept and include areas such as the butterfly garden, native plant garden, and the children’s garden. In partnership with AIDS Committee of Durham Region, we have a vegetable garden to supply their patrons with fresh produce. 

At the rear of the property, we boast a mix of woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and a pond. It’s nature’s perfect recipe for every level of flora and fauna. Trails form loops through the landscape and offering relaxed paths for walking and seating areas for sitting and contemplating the natural environment.

On June 22nd take the time to explore throughout our property. To help you find your way around, we are providing a map and a list of ten items for you to find. Some will be in the gardens and some will be on the trails. You can use the map to show where you found the various locations or you can show us a selfie of yourself with the item. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t find them all. Everyone gets a prize just for visiting. Enjoy your time in this natural gem right here in Courtice!

Charlie Lawton has spent decades working on and around film. He was a founding manager of the Toronto Underground Cinema, which ran from 2010 to 2012, and has performed in Burlesque, clown and vaudeville shows, and recently had a gallery showing of his photography.

Always eager to experiment, try new things and find new outlets for creativity, Charlie lives for the story and for story telling.
